Up until 1998 the Land Cruiser used a straight axle (or live axle) closed knuckle. The knuckle pivots left to right, using knuckle bearings, one top and one bottom per side. With the use of larger tires and rims the knuckle bearing (AKA trunnion bearing, king pin bearing) takes a lot of pounding abuse. Most of the wear to the bearing occurs in the straight line position. Rotating knuckle left to right and the knuckle wants to return to center every time is a sign of bearing wear. For 80 Series, the kits do not come with shims, you must reuse your old ones.
Always refer to your factory Chassis Body Manual for procedures (see page 221).
Part #200-12 hub socket is a great addition to your Land Cruiser tools for proper torque specs.

Newfield High Strength Birfield Axle |

If you have a problem with breaking the stock birfield axles due to larger tires, V8 engine or radical wheeling, Specter has the answer. Newfield High Strength Replacement Birfield Axles are made from billet alloy steel that is stronger than stock. The Newfield are made physically larger than the stock birfield for added strength. Finally the Newfield is heat treated and subjected to cryogenic cooling for increased surface hardness and toughness.

When rebuilding your front end, SOR has a choice of two kits for you to choose from. The Minor Shim & Gasket Kit contains just the shims and gaskets for both sides. The Major Shim & Gasket Kit contains shims, gaskets, front axle wheel seals, birfield axle seals, and lock tabs for both sides. For 80 Series, the kits do not come with shims, you must reuse your old ones.
Part #200-12 hub socket is required for proper torque.

Birfield Seal Replacement Kit |

|
|
Does your 1968-1998 front axles have deposits of gooey grease on the inside of the front knuckles? These deposits are generally caused by worn out Birfield Seals. If the seals are not replaced, the thin grease will migrate into the brake drum or onto the rotor, causing premature brake and possible wheel bearing failure. Specter now offers you the convenience of a kit with the minimum gaskets and seals necessary to replace both of the Birfield Seals on your front axle. This kit contains Birfield Seals (qty 2), Spindle Gaskets (qty 2), Wheel Seals (qty 2), Loc Tabs (qty 2), retainer Gaskets (qty 2), and Hub Gaskets (qty 2). The wheel seals are included so you can inspect and repack the inner wheel bearings.

Specter also suggests the purchase of a Hub Socket part #200-12 and Front Axle Maintenance Manual #223-25 if you do not already have them.
