Stock Land Cruiser steering for FJ40, FJ45 & FJ55 have three tie rod assemblies. The FJ40 & FJ45 have five replaceable tie rod ends and one rebuildable drag link assembly. The FJ55 has six tie rod ends, only four are replaceable, where the remaining two are on the drag link assembly.
With the use of lift kits, larger and wider (than stock) rims and tires, the tie rod ends are a very common wear area. The construction of the tie rod ends/drag link as shown in diagrams, shows a spring loaded ball and socket. As the spring starts to lose it’s tension, the ball becomes loose in the socket, thus accelerating the wear factor. Bad boots, let the dirt and grime in and the grease out, shortening the life of the tie rod end. So the replacement of the tie rod end becomes necessary.

Tie Rod Ends are another Critical Control Component where Specter Off-Road refuses to compromise quality for price. SOR only offers Heat Treated Tie Rod Ends manufactured in Japan. Heat Treating makes the Tie Rod End stronger and more durable. This durability leads to parts that last far longer than parts that are not Heat Treated. Since steering accuracy is of paramount importance SOR chooses not to offer cheap, sub-standard Tie Rod Ends. Beware of low quality less expensive, poorly made Tie Rod Ends that have not been Heat Treated. For strength, durability and safety choose quality steering components from SOR. |
