Specter Off-Road Catalog Navigation Help

Navigating Our Catalog Online and in Print

How we got to this point

In some cases, you will find part numbers are obvious, in others, not so much. Our part numbering system goes back 40 years to our first printed catalog, evolved when we took Specter Off-Road to the Internet in 1996 and continues to evolve as we add new parts. By following our formula, you will easily figure out which parts fit your vehicle.

Part numbers start with the catalog page number on which they are found. If you have a copy of our 500 page printed or PDF catalog, use the number in the upper corner of any page, minus any letter, as the first part of the number. Then add the number of the part on the page separating the two pieces with a hyphen. We will use #012-20 Air Cleaner Assembly as our example.

Back in the days of print, we published a companion price list of all our products. You would locate the product page and part number in the catalog, then locate it in the price list to find what version of the part fits your vehicle. Considering our inventory has grown to close to 40,000 part numbers, we no longer print the price list. It was obsolite on the day it was published. With the advent of the Internet, our inventory can be dynamic offering you the best parts at the best price.

This gives you a little history of our numbering system. It's something you need to understand if you only use our printed catalog to shop. In combination with our website, it becomes a powerful tool. Once you have the number from the catalog, you can use it to find the rest of the information online by entering it as the search criteria. If you are using the print catalog with the PDF on your computer, you can use the clickable index of the PDF to find your parts. The PDF catalog is a digital copy of the printed catalog and PDF pages are hyperlinked to the corresponding page at sor.com, you just click and go.

Finding Your Part Number

Say you are looking for an air cleaner assembly for your May of 1980 FJ40 with a 2F engine. You find that page 12 starts the air cleaner components section of the catalog. Looking at the assembly drawings, you see that the air cleaner assembly is part #20. So, an Air Cleaner Assembly is 012-20. Note that 2-digit page numbers and 1-digit part numbers have a leading zero (ex. 012-01). In the old days, you'd refine the number using the price list; finding 012-20 on the list. You'd find 6 or so different 2F Air Cleaner Assemblies. The one that fits your model and date range is #012-20K fitting 1/79-7/80 2F. You’d call us with that number or send us an order via the postal service. Review the examples below for further clarification. Try putting 012, 012-20, 012-20K or “air” in the search box in the upper left corner of any sor.com page and see the different results.

See the data tag section, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Locations to locate your production date.

In reality, it’s much simpler when you shop online. You can still use the printed catalog or PDF to leisurely browse for parts and collect your numbers. When it comes time to order you’re even more prepared. You can enter the page number as your search criteria online to view the same page or enter the full part number to get the Fits listing including price and availability of the parts you need. If you don’t have the page or part number, you can search key words such as “air” or even “air cleaner”. From there you can add it to a shopping cart and complete. Be sure to inquire if the part appears out of stock, especially if it's a used part.

If you're in doubt or maybe own Frankencruiser and want to double check, give us a call. We're happy to help. We've been taking phone orders for over 40 years, long before the Internet. We can enter your order on the spot confirming fit, stock and price.
